Personally, I have never eaten or hurt a dog during my life. I believe that the vast majority of Chinese is like me, regard their dogs as pets rather than food. But the mentioned sculpture used a symbol of the Chinese restaurant, which implies all Chinese eat dogs like fast food daily. This is what I cannot tolerant anymore!
Unfortunately, not everyone wants to understand my country and what do most modern Chinese people look like. During my 18-month visiting time at the University of XXX, I have been rudely asked whether I eat dogs several times. They are all bad experiences. I know they are not racial discrimination but the uncorrected stereotype to Chinese
The University of XXX is a beautiful school with students and faculty from all over the world, including China. For this reason, I think you should do something to change it.
I sincerely apologize for the fact that the sculpture, "No MSG" has offended you. The Harn Museum of Art does not, in any way, support art that is racially offensive. Furthermore, the Harn does not agree with the grossly overgeneralized statement made by this artist. Out of obligation to an artist's freedom of expression, the Harn decided to display the work for the short duration of the exhibition when it was selected by outside jurors for the "Art of Inquiry" exhibition. Please be assured that no one on the staff would ever chose this work for permanent display in the museum. With your permission, I would like to share your email with the artist as well. I think it will help him understand that his art is offensive. Of course, we could remove your name and contact information before sending it if you would prefer. Again, I am very sorry that this sculpture has offended you.
