Dear Professors & Staffs,
On behalf of the broad student community across Chinese universities, I am addressing the global academic community to report alleged attempts by Wuhan University—a key institution under China’s "Project 985"—to shelter academic misconduct.
Not only did the university allow a master's thesis widely recognized by the public as containing clear academic violations to pass review, but it also claimed after widespread public scrutiny that “no academic misconduct was found,” trampling on academic ethics and exposing the failure of its academic governance mechanisms.
Event Summary:
On May 1, 2024, the master’s thesis titled An Economic Analysis of the Impact of Fertility Behaviors in China and India on Domestic Violence by Yang Jingyuan of Wuhan University passed the university’s internal review and was published on CNKI, China’s National Thesis Database (link:中印生育行为影响家庭暴力的经济学分析 - 中国知网)
On July 27,2025 the thesis was exposed for alleged plagiarism, fabrication of facts, data manipulation, suspected AI-generated content, and fundamental errors in its core model (evidence link:evidence 、 evidence 1 、evidence 2 、evidence 3). As WHU is a prestigious 985 institution in China, this scandal went viral across Chinese social media, accumulating over 10 million views.
On September 20, 2025, Wuhan University released its review outcome regarding Yang Jingyuan’s thesis (link：investigation report-WHU), stating that “no academic misconduct such as plagiarism, subjective fabrication, data tampering, or conclusion fabrication was identified.” The university merely acknowledged “over a hundred instances of non-standard issues, mainly involving irregular expression, citation, formatting, inaccurate translation, and imprecise analysis.” This response has reignited public controversy.
Nature of the Incident:
First, master’s theses are supposed to undergo a rigorous year-round closed-loop review process, including proposal defense, blind review, and oral defense. The fact that a thesis riddled with flaws passed all stages undetected reveals a collapse in Wuhan University’s academic governance system. Second, the university’s outright denial of academic misconduct in the wake of the scandal—an act perceived as official sheltering of such violations—could deal a devastating blow to China’s academic ecosystem.
Call to Action:
We call upon universities and academic organizations worldwide to scrutinize and evaluate Wuhan University’s handling of this incident. Such efforts will contribute to fostering a fair and rigorous academic environment within China’s scholarly community.
