They've all done things, often beautiful things, in a context that was already set out before them, which they had no inclination to disturb. Without being aware of it, they've remained prisoners of those invisible and despotic circles which delimit the universe of a certain milieu in a given era. To have broken these bounds they would have had to rediscover in themselves that capability which was their birthright, as it was mine: the capacity to be alone.

许多学者,包括且不限于一些顶尖数学家和竞赛选手,都强调过竞赛和学术研究的区别:竞赛像短跑、而研究则像长跑;竞赛鼓励牺牲思维深度来提升思考速度,而研究强调深度、不追求给定时间内的解题能力;竞赛题一定有答案,而在研究中找到“可能有答案”的非平凡问题本身,就需要过人的洞察力。
平心而论,一个人的成就确实不能光看天赋、甚至个人能力。选择的方向,个人性格,乃至历史的进程都会有影响。但是反过来说,“竞赛”也是一样的:这些影响成功与否的因素,同样适用于竞赛培训。
